About Us

Dr. Marjorie Zielke (seated second from right) and her team of researchers, artists, and developers at The Center for Simulation and Synthetic Humans at UTD. Walter, one of the lab’s virtual humans, is seated to the left of Dr. Zielke.

The Center for Simulation and Synthetic Humans at the University of Texas at Dallas (The Center) was established by Dr. Marjorie Zielke and has successfully researched, developed, and implemented a variety of award winning educational and training simulation tools. The Center team is composed of researchers in educational technology, computer science, social science, computer graphics, high fidelity visualizations, and brain science.  The Center staff includes approximately 20 undergraduate/graduate students and full-time staff.  Dr. Zielke and colleagues from The Center have over a decade of experience successfully assembling multidisciplinary teams in social science and technology research and managing collaborative projects across medical, education and law enforcement knowledge domains. Each project has required cross-disciplinary collaboration between multidisciplinary teams and subject matter experts. The Center’s focus on AI, machine learning, human-computer interaction, virtual and augmented reality, high speed broadband networks and high fidelity digital human avatars enabled it to develop and test complex simulation tools such as the Emotive Virtual Patient for medical interviewing and a virtual impaired driver to train police officers on how to properly identify levels of alcohol impairment.
